What We Do

As we state in our purpose statement, our primary goal is to promote a love of literature in all forms across the state of Kentucky. In addition, we work hard to give our members - all Kentucky writers - opportunities to hone their skills, expand their network of contacts, and highlight their books.

Upcoming Events:

Festival of Books
Once a year BWC hosts a Festival of Books in conjunction with Downtown Frankfort's Candlelight Tradition. The past two years the Festival has been held at the Foundry, located on Broadway Street in Frankfort. This event is a festiec, fun kick-off to the holiday season.

Frankfort Farmers Market
BWC has been invited to participate in Frankfort KY's Farmers Market on special event days - the Thanksgiving Market Day and the Christmas Market Day. We love connecting with central Kentucky's shoppers at this awesome venue and are proud to have some of our members represent our organization
Conference of Writers
On the last Saturday in April each year BWC hosts the Conference of Writers - an event that has attracted interest across the continent for the quality of presenters. We have been honored to host a current or former Kentucky Poet Laureate as a keynote speaker each year, and 2024 will be no different as we welcome George Ella Lyon, along with other highly successful Kentucky writers, poets, and nonfiction authors. For information about 2024's Conference of Writers, see this page.
Monthly Meetings and Special Interest Groups
BWC meets on the second Thursday of each month in person at the Paul Sawyier Library in Frankfort Kentucky at 5:00 p.m. In addition, the Fiction Bunch- a fiction critique group - meets on the third Thursdays of the month at the same location. We'd love to have you join us.

Writing Contests
BWC works hard to encourage emerging writers in whatever form and genre they feel gifted. And we believe Kentucky is rich with fictional possibilities! As such, we have launched a short story contest - Kentucky Visions Short Story Contest - to promote Kentucky-based fiction. Whether you are a Kenntucky based author, or write stories set in Kentucky, we encourage you to submit!
From Pen to Page Front Cover FINAL.jpg
In From Pen to Page, the members of BWC share their talents and their hearts. In this selection of poetry, fiction, nonfiction, devotionals, and nostalgia, you will…

… stroll across the Plaza de la Enfants beneath a blazing sun.
… experience the fresh signs of morning as the world awakens
    around you.
… stand beside an ancient wood-burning stove, your mouth
watering from the aroma of homemade biscuits.
… feel long-dead memories stir to life at the kiss of a loved one.
… glide through rushing waters in search of a place to belong.
… find comfort in the whistle of a passing train.
… make peace with a nest of wasps.

BWC members are active writers in all genres who believe that the printed word enhances the lives of writers and readers. The coalition endeavors to showcase writers and their works through discussions, readings, and book-signing events. The BWC meets the second Thursday of each month and is open to all writers.
